Since 2001, Stanford has found ways to reduce its potable water consumption, even as campus facilities and the demand for more resources have grown.

Promoting Sustainability Through Transit & Transportation

Our Stanford community is committed to reducing local traffic congestion and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions generated by the university, contributing to a 30% reduction in drive-alone commutes over the last twenty years.

Biking is one of the most sustainable ways to navigate Stanford’s campus, with 22% of commuters choosing this mode. We strive to ensure that biking is efficient and safe for everyone.
Stanford’s Marguerite shuttle is free to the general public and moves about 6,250 riders daily. A network of 20 routes provides critical first-/last-mile connections to various locations on and around campus.

Since 2009, sustainable commutes—including those made by bicycle, public transportation, carpool, etc.—have been the primary mode of transportation for the Stanford community. The pandemic sparked a rise in telecommuting, which also serves as a clean form of “mobility” that mitigates traffic and reduces emissions.

Powering Campus Sustainably

Stanford Energy Systems Innovations (SESI) has transformed campus infrastructure with cutting-edge facilities, making it one of the most sustainable and efficient energy systems in the world.

Expanding Food Recovery Efforts

In 2025, Stanford launched a pilot program to collect surplus food from campus cafes and events, aiming to reduce waste and provide over 30,000 meals to local food recovery organizations.

Advancing Wildfire Resilience

In partnership with local agencies, Stanford’s Wildfire Resilience team treated over 1,000 acres in 2023-24 and piloted new technologies to better prevent and detect wildfires across vulnerable landscapes.

Testing Smarter Solar Farming

In California’s Central Valley, Stanford researchers are piloting agrivoltaics systems—integrating solar panels with crops—to boost yields, generate renewable energy, and enhance soil carbon storage, all guided by local community input.
